There is significant evidence to show that babies of smokers are 30% more likely to suffer a cot death than the babies of non-smokers. It’s really important that both you and your partner give up smoking.
As soon as you know you are pregnant you should seek the support of your midwife to help you stop smoking during pregnancy. There are numerous smoking cessation services which your midwife can help you access.
Each year, in Scotland, a large proportion of cot deaths occur in homes where one or more adults smoke.
You should also keep your home and your car smoke-free. Don’t smoke, or allow anyone else to smoke in your home, car or any other confined space where your baby will be.
