Does breastfeeding protect my baby from cot death?

Breastfeeding is the very best way to feed your baby and will help protect him/her from infection. The current evidence would seem to suggest that breastfeeding does provide a protective effect against cot death. However, this does not mean that breastfed babies do not die from cot death – it simply means that it may help to reduce the risks of cot death.

It is important to ensure that if you are breastfeeding that you continue to follow the other safe sleeping advice and ensure that your baby always sleeps in a safe place. The safest place for your baby to sleep is in a cot, in your room for the first 6 months.
